"I get what`s considered a farmer`s tan," she says. "As far as the tan goes, I would rather have healthy skin."
Because Pam knows working on the ranch under the sun puts her at risk for skin cancer.
"My mother was diagnosed with it years ago," she says. "So it brought more awareness to me."
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, but it`s also the most preventable.
It`s a lesson that many women don`t learn until they`re older.
"Once they start to get into their 30s they see the effects of what
they did as a teen," says nurse practitioner Shelly Botsford.
It`s never too early or too late to protect your skin with long sleeve clothing, floppy hats, shades and sunblock.
Zinc oxide is a very important ingredient to see in a sunscreen
because it gives you UVA and UVB protection. UVA rays can cause
premature aging and skin cancer.
"I tell women, even with they`re not outside people, that UVA rays penetrate through glass and even the clouds."
Botsford says women should be using sunblock every day, no matter what. You have nothing to lose but your health.
