Hands and feet - Creative colour for your nails

For lasting nail colour, first apply two layers of clear base coat (one horizontally, one vertically) to help strengthen nails and smooth ridges. Then roll a bottle of polish between your palms to mix the colour and eliminate any air bubbles. Apply one stroke of colour down the centre of the nail, followed by one on each side. Add a second coat when the first one is dry for complete, streak-free coverage. Finish with a coat of clear enamel or top coat.

A classic French manicure never goes out of fashion. Start with a base coat or nail-strengthening treatment product, and then apply a thin ribbon of matte white to each nail tip. Allow to dry. Apply two coats of translucent pale pink over the entire nail and finish with clear.

You don't need to visit a salon to create amazing, professional-looking nails. Most cosmetic houses create seasonal nail colours every autumn and spring to complement the colour trends seen on the catwalk, so look out for the latest shades. If your nails aren't up to strong colour, why not try a set of fake nails - opt for either clear or coloured. Alternatively, decorate your nails with some of the tiny stickers available. Or why not try these fun patterns: Paint your nails with two coats of dark purple or deep plum. When dry, add a contrasting strip of matte white to the tip. Paint the whole nail with two coats of pastel lilac and allow to dry. Now draw a diagonal line in bright purple and fill in one side. Paint the whole nail with two coats of rich chocolately brown. When dry, use a fine brush to dab on polka dots in gold for a striking combination. Paint the whole nail with two coats of shocking pink. When dry, top the entire nail with a layer of pale iridescent pink for a beautiful finish.
