Get a cool facial right from the refrigerator

Or you could save some money by staying in the kitchen and making one of your own.

Facial maskThere are dozens of home concoctions out there that will help you achieve similar results -- depending on your skin's needs.

Dry skin

If you have dry skin, Fitness magazine recommends stocking up on avocados.  They contain vitamin E, which naturally reduce the risk of UV damage.  The California Avocado Commission offers this recipe for a kitchen-made mask:

Mix the flesh of one avocado and a tablespoon of mayonnaise; apply to face and neck; wipe clean with a warm, wet towel after 10 minutes. Voil -- smooth, soft skin.

Fashions Plus offers another avocado mask recipe to help combat dry skin:

Recipe:  Mash the meat of the avocado into a creamy texture. Massage into the face and neck with upward and outward movements. Tissue off after 15 minutes with rosewater or witch hazel.

Results: Skin fells tight and buttery soft.

Pore cleaning

If your pores need some serious cleaning, grab some garlic.  It will act as a panacea for pimples and make your skin tingle.

Recipe: Peel and mash eight fresh garlic cloves (or, if you're lazy, use crushed garlic from a jar). Leave on your face for 15 minutes. Wash off with a warm cloth.

Results: Won't smell too good. Garlic gets even smellier as it rinses off, but the good news is that dead skin comes off with it. If you can stand the stink, try it. A word of warning, however: Keep it away from your eyes.

Tired eyes

Speaking of eyes, are yours bloodshot and tired?  Try this to brighten them up:

Recipe: Soak a sterile strip of puffy cotton in cold skim milk. Place over eyes for 10 minutes. Rinse entire face in warm, then cool, water.

Results: Eyes look clear and sparkling.

Eye baggage

To lighten dark circles under your eyes, wrap a grated raw potato in cheesecloth and apply to eyelids for 15 to 20 minutes.  Wipe off residue and apply an eye cream.  See your circles lighten and your skin tighten.

Oily, dry or both?

Do you suffer from combination skin?  Squeeze some lemons!

Recipe: Squeeze half a lemon and mix the juice with one beaten egg white.  Leave on your face overnight or, for a quick pick-me-up, just 15 minutes.  Splash warm water on your face to rinse.

Results:  Since lemon works as a bleaching agent, your blotches go away.  You can also use commercial lemon soap on a daily basis.
