CSB to expand share of Asian cosmetics market

Ciba Specialty Chemicals has signed a joint venture agreement with Virchow Group, a leading Indian pharmaceutical company based in Hyderabad. Under the joint venture agreement, the Triclosan manufacturing of Virchow Drugs Private Ltd. in Hyderabad, India, is being further upgraded using technology from Ciba Specialty Chemicals. This will create a production facility fully enabled to make Triclosan with purity equivalent to United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) specifications.

With this joint venture, Ciba Specialty Chemicals wants to expand its share of the growing cosmetic markets in Asia and further improve its position in the region. Together, Ciba and Virchow will safeguard that the Asian cosmetic category is served only with high purity ingredients to guarantee consistent product quality, and to meet international environmental standards.

Leonardo Harsch, Global Head of Ciba Specialty Chemicals' Detergent & Hygiene Business Line, says, "This cooperation allows Ciba to further increase its position by expanding the offer of quality antimicrobial products in the Asian region where Ciba has a well established presence. The high quality production facilities of Virchow and Ciba's leading position in the Triclosan business fit together very well."

Ciba Specialty Chemicals is the inventor and market leader in pharma-grade Triclosan, a highly efficacious, long-lasting antimicrobial ingredient. Triclosan is currently used in a variety of products, including toothpaste, soap, deodorants and non-cosmetic articles such as shower curtains and technical textiles. Triclosan helps to prevent the occurrence of oral infections, germ transfer, body odour, and material decay.
