Affordable Luxuries For Summer Beauty
The thought of summer approaching conjures up yearnings for picnics
in the sunshine and romantic flings that last for just a few thrilling
months. Unfortunately, it also means it's time to get our bodies back
in shape and toss the makeup that got our pale, dehydrated skin through
the winter.
One of the best ways to transition into your summer look is with new
beauty products that will keep you looking cool even when it's
sweltering out. While there are many secrets to looking "beautiful"
this season, the real trick is achieving the look you want without
spending a fortune. That way your summer funds can go to other
important summer accessories, like happy hour margaritas and weekends
in the Hamptons.
So, welcome to another installment of Forbes.com's ongoing series of
Affordable Luxuries, where nothing we recommend costs more than
$200--and sometimes a lot less, even if it appears pricey or makes you
look like a million bucks. For instance, there is the latest product
by ultra-luxurious La Mer, whose decadent $110-per-ounce face cream is
a celebrity favorite. ( Jennifer Lopez uses Crème de la Mer not just on
her face, but her entire body.) The Estee Lauder (nyse: EL - news -
people )-owned company now offers an equally rich body crème that
contains a micro-algae complex and sea kelp to clarify, tone and firm
skin for $195. It's the perfect moisturizer to replenish your freshly
tanned epidermis after a long day lounging poolside.
Speaking of tans, DuWop cosmetics' new BronzeRush for $34 will
deliver an all-over sun-kissed look to your skin. The palette has a
powder bronzer with a gel-based translucent blush that goes right on
the apples of your cheeks. There are two different shades to choose
from to give your skin a natural glow.
For a perfectly flawless looking face, Jessica Liebeskind, a
makeup-artist and former product developer for Bobbi Brown Cosmetics,
suggests that women turn to the Laura Mercier makeup line. Liebeskind's
favorite product is the foundation primer that goes for $30. "With so
many people wearing minimal makeup when it's hot out, this product
helps illuminate the skin and helps the foundation you use glide on, so
your skin just glows," she says.
Two other summer beauty essentials Liebeskind recommends are Kevyn
Aucoin's mini makeup brush set for $140. It includes six travel-sized
versions of the company's brushset that costs $340. Then there's Trish
McEvoy's limited edition Power of Makeup: Bronzed Island Girl set for
$165. It's an all-in-one face palette that has two blushes, four eye
shadows and three lip colors. "It's everything you need to look in
season for summer," Liebeskind says.
Of course, to top off a great summer look you need a great summer
scent. Ajne Parfumerie and Apothecary's personalized perfumes run
between $500 and $5,000 a bottle. But bottles of the Ready-to-Wear
collection can be had for less than $200. You can choose scents like
Desir or Solaire that contain essential oils such as Moroccan jasmine
and tropical ylang ylang, so every day can smell like a vacation--even
if it's spent inside an office.
